Iran’s medal haul at Islamic Solidarity Games hits 90

The Iranian sports delegation has continued to exhibit awe-inspiring displays of athletic talents at the 4th edition of Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan, and been awarded eight medals, five gold ones only in one sport, to lift the country’s medal count to 90 in the multinational and multi-sport event.

On Sunday, the Iran men's national volleyball team registered an emphatic win by seeing off the Azerbaijani squad 3-0, with the set scores of 25-16, 29-27 and 25-18 in the title match played at the Crystal Hall 1 in the Azerbaijani capital city f Baku.

The Iranian pair of Shahnam Nazarpour and Mojtaba Valipour also clinched a gold medal in the final heat of men’s 10m synchronized platform, having tallied 326.04 points.

They were followed by Artem Danilov and Dmitriy Sorokin from Azerbaijan, who earned 265.11 points. The Iraqi divers Hussein al-Elayawi and Hussein al-Maliki landed in the third place, having garbered 215.64 points.

Meanwhile, Iran’s zurkhaneh practitioner Ali Jalijoo recived the gold medal in charkhe teez competitions. His Iraqi and Azerbaijani opponents Jaber Abdulameer and Orkhan Khanlarov finished second and third respectively.

In the meel bazi division of zurkhaneh, Pezhman Sokoonati topped the podium. Khayyam Orujov from Azerbaijan picked up the silver medal, and Afghan competitor Ahmad Shakib Atahi took the bronze.

Mohsen Golestanizadeh from Iran stole the show in the kabbadeh contests, and clinched the gold medal. Iraqi Jaber Abdulameer and Azerbaijan’s Mammadi Salamov claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the charkhi chamani, Ali Jalijoo finished in the first spot. Azerbaijani contestant Orkhan Khanlarov and Mustafa Nooristani from Afghanistan claimed the second and third places.

Mostafa Mofid added another gold medal to Iran’s medal tally at the Islamic Solidity Games with his impressive performances in meel sangin contests. Ridha Algburi from Iraq and Azerbaijan’s Khayyam Orujov claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Iranian Mobin Zibalagha managed to win a silver medal in the sang competitions. Rufat Gulaliyev from Azerbaijan snatched the gold medal and Tajikistan’s Navruz Arabov got the bronze.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games started in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 12 under the motto “Solidarity is Our Strength.” The tournament will wrap up on May 22, 2017.

Athletes from 54 Muslim countries around the world are representing their nations over 10 days of competition across 20 different sports, which include 23 disciplines (athletics and para-athletics, aquatics – diving, aquatics – swimming, aquatics – water polo, basketball 3×3, football, gymnastics – artistic, gymnastics – rhythmic, wushu, table tennis, handball, judo and blind judo, wrestling – Greco, wrestling – freestyle, shooting, tennis, volleyball, boxing, zurkhaneh, karate, taekwondo and weightlifting) in 16 world-class sporting venues.

Azerbaijan is on the top of the medal count table with 154 medals (75 gold, 46 silvers and 33 bronzes).

Turkey has claimed the second spot with 185 medals (68 gold, 63 silvers, 54 bronzes), while the Islamic Republic of Iran is on the third with a total of 90 medals (31 gold, 26 silvers and 33 bronzes).

Uzbekistan, Bahrain, Algeria, Morocco, Indonesia, Egypt and Kyrgyzstan have earned the 4th to 10th places respectively.
