Sanders called Hillary’s ‘I’m with her,’ slogan phony: Book reveals

US Democratic presidential candidates Senator Bernie Sanders (R) and Secretary Hillary Clinton

US Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders called a slogan of his party’s nominee for the 2016 presidential election “phony” on the campaign trail.

“I’m with her,” was a campaign slogan of Hillary Clinton, whom the Vermont senator fought against ahead of her nomination last July.

According to the newly released book Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign, the Vermont Senator refused to state the slogan at the end of an ad for the former secretary of state, The Hill reported on Tuesday.

“It’s so phony!” Sanders said. “I don’t want to say that.”

In the ad, the former presidential candidate was supposed to admire Clinton for her education, healthcare and minimum wage proposals.

He was also supposed to lambast then-Republican nominee Donald Trump for his views on climate change and economy.

The Clinton campaign decided not to use the ad but parts of it were later released online.

According to a Clinton aide, “People felt that it was him delivering his message, not Hillary’s.”

Sanders came under pressure for endorsing Clinton at the 2016 Democratic Convention by some of his supporters, who accused him of giving up a fight against the US deep state.

Clinton, who was widely expected to defeat Trump and become the first female president of the United States, lost the battle.
