The following is an update on certain facts and figures about Iran's upcoming presidential election.

After the registration of candidates ends on April 15, the 12-member Guardian Council will start the process of vetting the candidates on April 16-20.

The Guardian Council is the body responsible for assessing the qualities of candidates and overseeing elections in Iran.

The time to screen the qualities of the candidates could be extended for another five days until April 25.

After all the candidates are examined, the Interior Ministry will announce the list of approved candidates from April 26 to 27.

The final candidates will then have 20 days from April 28 until May 17 to campaign for the election, which will be held two days after campaigning ends.

The candidates are not allowed to campaign the day before the vote.

On May 19, Iranians will cast their votes in more than 65,000 ballot boxes across the country. There will be an estimated 55 million eligible voters.

According to election authorities, Iranians residing abroad can also vote in more than 140 countries.

The vote counting will immediately start after the election ends and the result of the election will be announced the following day.

But if the votes of the leading candidate were less than 50 percent, the run-off votes would take place between the lead candidate and the runner-up on May 26.
