Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers have exhibited praiseworthy displays of gripping skills and muscular strength at the 2017 edition of Hungarian Grand Prix Imre Polyák Memorial, and collected two medal, including one silver.
Iranian athlete Alireza Karegar, who had received a bye in his opening round contest of men’s 59-kilogram weight category, lost to Kristijan Fris from Serbia by 6 points to 8 in the first contest on Sunday.
He then prevailed over his Hungarian rival Jozsef Andrasi 8-4 in the repêchage round and claimed a bronze medal.
Earlier, Iran’s Hossein Shokri fell to Hungarian contestant Viktor Lorinc 0-8 by technical fall in the final bout of the 85-kilogram weight division, and collected the silver.
The 2017 edition of Hungarian Grand Prix Imre Polyák Memorial kicked off at Szombathely city on March 24, and wrapped up on March 26.
Dozens of Greco-Roman wrestlers from various countries, including Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Lithuania, Poland and Serbia, took part in the tournament.
The event was in honor of featherweight Hungarian Greco-Roman wrestler Imre Polyák. He competed in the 1952, 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won three silver and one gold medal. He won the world title in 1955, 1958 and 1962, and placed second in 1961 and 1963. Nationally Polyák won 12 Hungarian titles and was named Sportsman of the Year in 1958 and 1962.
