These are some of the headlines we are tracking for you in this episode of On the News Line:

Apartheid regime

A United Nations agency has come down heavily on Israel condemning it for imposing an apartheid regime against Palestinians as a whole. The report was issued by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia which aims to support economic and social development in the region. The report demanded the international community take concrete punitive measures against Israel. It calls on states, governments and institutions to support boycott, divestment and sanctions initiatives and other activities aimed at ending the Israeli regime of apartheid.

Trump's luncheon with Saudis

US president Donald Trump lunching with Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House…this has drawn sharp criticism from some observers who are angry at the sumptuous meal. They say the luncheon should not have taken place while Yemenis have to go hungry under daily bombardment of the guest’s home country Saudi Arabia.  Trump had promised to bring about fundamental changes in both foreign and domestic policies if elected. But, as it appears, there will be no change in policy on Saudi Arabia two months into his presidency.

No to populism in the Netherlands

The failure of the far-right politician Geert Wilders in the Dutch general elections came as a surprise to many. The extremist politician was riding on a wave of support in the several past months over a platform of positions against Muslims and the European Union.  But he eventually fell short of expectations after results showed that the public had already found his positions too aggressive. Interestingly, the turnout at the polls has been described to have been at a record high. This may show how fearful the public may have become over the likelihood of seeing Wilders at the helms of the state. And that was how they defeated a strong populist force that was much feared even beyond the borders. Wilders lost the battle to his closest rival Prime Minister Mark Rooteh.
