Oscar nominees voice solidarity with Iranian director

Filmmaker Asghar Farhadi poses with his Oscar in 2012.

Oscar-nominated directors of foreign language movies have declared their solidarity with fellow nominee, Asghar Farhadi ahead of the Academy Awards.

Directors of all Oscar-nominated foreign language films banded together to offer a emphatic disapproval of the climate of fanaticism and nationalism ahead of Sunday’s event.

The statement comes as the foreign language film race has been overshadowed by the US President Donald Trumps’ 7-country travel ban.

The restrictions had earlier resulted in the Iranian nominee announcing that he is boycotting the ceremony.

Donald Trump Muslim ban kept Oscar-nominated director Asghar Farhadi from 2017 ceremony.

After penning the statement, the nominees got together again to support Farhadi’s decision and reiterate that movies intend to give a voice to people in all countries and peoples.

The filmmakers had earlier staged a rally alongside a crowd of 500 celebrities to denounce Trump’s immigration policies.

Farhadi himself had also virtually attended the ceremony with a video message.
