US President Barack Obama is trying to create chaos on his way out of the White House in order to undermine the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, says a political commentator in Washington.
Jmaes Jatras, a specialist in international relations, made the remarks while discussing outgoing US Vice President Joe Biden’s recent attacks against Russia.
Speaking only two days before Trump’s January 20 inauguration, Biden told hundreds of world leaders and businesspeople at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Swiss, that the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin was “the greatest” threat to international order.
“Under President Putin, Russia is working with every tool available to them to whittle away at the edges of the European project, test the fault lines of western nations and return to a politics defined by spheres of influence,” Biden said.
He further warned that Russia was planning to intervene in “the democratic process” of European countries, repeating Washington’s claims that Moscow meddled in the 2016 US presidential election that led to Trump’s victory in November.
Despite reluctantly confirming US intelligence reports that accuse Putin of personally ordering cyber attacks to change the outcome of last year’s vote, Trump keeps showing strong willingness to work with the Russian head of state.
Jatras told Press TV that Biden’s remarks were “totally irresponsible" and were "clearly designed to undermine the authority of the incoming administration.”
“We have to see this in the context of the baseless Russian hacking charges, of the provocative maneuvers that are taking place,” he said, referring to NATO’s military buildup in the Baltic region near Russia as an example.
Obama’s decision to impose more sanctions on Russia was another sign of a “full-court crass of the lamest of lame ducks to try and create as much chaos and tension in the world to mask” his failures, Jatras argued.
The analyst further noted that Obama was trying to undermine the prospect of the Trump administration reaching out to Moscow "to partner with the Russians” against terrorism.
“This is just a petulant and irresponsible action by Mr. Biden,” he concluded.
