Endangered orangutan debuts at Chicago zoo

Sophia, a 35 year old Bornean orangutan holds her 2 week-old daughter at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, USA.

A baby orangutan has made her debut at a Chicago zoo with the hope to raise awareness about threats facing the critically endangered species.

The unnamed female Bornean orangutan born on December 20 at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo, made her first appearance at the facility’s tropic world on Tuesday.

The fluffy infant had been kept behind the scenes with her mother, Sofia and closely monitored by animal care staff.

But now zoo visitors can have the chance to see the newborn in her family’s enclosure, while clinging to her mother, being nursed or asleep.

The zoo officials say the baby orangutan’s birth is significant to the zoo’s population. They hope the debutant will raise public awareness about the species that has been prone to dangers such as deforestation and human housing among other threats.
