A mass shooting on Christmas Eve has left four people dead in the US state of North Carolina, officials say.

Police officials found the four people dead with gunshot wounds at a residence just outside the city of Wilson on Saturday afternoon.

"There are four gunshot victims on Banks Lane," said Wanda Samuel of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.

No other information has been released on the victims’ names or ages but one of them is a man who did maintenance work for a property owner, according to a woman who lives on Banks Lane.

Police have not released any information about the suspect or suspects yet, saying an investigation is underway.

Local residents, who described the neighborhood as quiet, expressed concern about the incident, with a woman saying, “It’s Christmas Eve. It’s shocking.”

“What could’ve happened? What could’ve made a person be so crazy to do some things like that,” said Michael Taylor, who lives in the area.

“This is a good area. A very good area. Quiet. You don’t hear any bad things going on,” Taylor added.

Today, there are some 300 million firearms in private hands in the US, Columbia University researchers have found.

Statistics by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that firearms kill more than 33,000 people in the US every year, a number that includes accidental discharges, murders and suicides.
