The majority of Americans believe that US President-elect Donald Trump should stop using his personal Twitter account, a new poll shows.

According to the national Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday, 59 percent of American voters said the New York businessman should not keep his personal Twitter account as president, while 35 percent of the voters were in favor of Trump’s use of his social media profile.

"President-elect Donald Trump should shut down his personal Twitter account, American voters say 59-35 percent," the poll said.

According to Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll,  “Voters tell President-elect Donald Trump, ‘You’ve got the job, Now be a leader not a tweeter’... And we’re watching to make sure you put the country, not the Trump brand, first.”

Less than a week after the November 8 election Trump said he would continue using social media because it could help him fight back if the media reported biased or inaccurate information about him.

The survey also indicated that the 59 percent said they were “optimistic about the next four years with Donald Trump as president,” despite mixed views on his personal qualities.

The results come from polls conducted between November 17 and 20 with 1,071 voters interviewed nationwide. The poll has a margin of error of three percentage points.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll released a day earlier also showed that 46 percent of Americans had a very favorable view of Trump, a 9-point increase since the election.

Analysts believe that the real popularity test for Trump would begin when he takes office on January 20. Many of his supporters are looking forward to seeing if the 45th president would deliver on his many campaign promises.

Trump’s campaign was hit with many controversies since its inception in early 2015 but the real estate tycoon still managed to stun the world by defeating the heavily-favored Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, in the election.
