Millions of pilgrims have made their way to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq and commemorated Arba'een.

It marks 40 days after the tragedy of Karbala and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, in the battle of Karbala about 14 centuries ago. Imam Hussein was martyred because he refused to pledge allegiance to the tyrant of his time.

The long march leading up to Arba'een, and the ceremonies in Karbala are seen by the pilgrims as a way to promote unity among Muslims.
