Mobile game generates largest-ever dementia study

In Sea Hero Quest, players have to save an old sailor's lost memories by sailing a boat around the seas.

Scientists in the UK have developed a mobile game that they claim could lead to the development of early diagnostic tests for dementia.

Researchers say the game that is named Sea Hero Quest is designed to reveal the player's level of spatial awareness, that is, a key sign in the development and diagnosis of dementia. Over 2.4 million people have played the game.

Experts believe the game shows that human spatial recognition begins to decline from early adulthood. The game requires players to navigate a boat through waters in differently themed areas over 75 levels and collect items along the way.

From a scientific point of view, the game is about seeing what people do without influencing them. Doctors believe there is no cure for any type of dementia. According to charity group Alzheimer's Research, there are over 45 million people living with dementia worldwide.
