The German army has found 20 Takfiri militants in its ranks who had enlisted to gain weapons and tactical training to use later in terrorist attacks.
According to Germany’s Military Counterintelligence Service, MAD, on Saturday, 60 more soldiers are currently under surveillance for possible Takfiri ties.
MAD noted that the infiltrators had shown specific interest in advanced arms and strategic training which would have aided them during attacks inside and outside of Germany.
The agency noted that army recruitment offices throughout the country have reported “individual inquiries from applicants who are eager to join the Bundeswehr [the German military] for only a few months and are explicitly interested in intensive weapons and equipment training.”
During German boot camp training, recruits are schooled in shooting and marksmanship skills, topography and map reading, and basics of woodland and urban warfare, and battlefield emergency aid.
In April, Hans-Peter Bartels, a Social Democratic Party (SPD) MP in charge of military affairs noted that despite Takfirism not being a problem in the military, “it represents a real danger that we have to take seriously.”
In late August, Germany announced that comprehensive background checks will be carried out on all applicants, but currently only enlisted serviceman are being vetted.
According to the Defense Ministry, the new screening process will begin at the beginning of the New Year, as there are indications that Takfiri militants “are trying to insert the so-called short-time servicemen into the armed forces so that they can receive such training.”
