Former Iran and Esteghlal defender and head coach Mansour Pourheydari has passed away at the age of 70.

The legend of the capital’s Blues lost his year-long battle with cancer on Friday morning. Pourheydari played for Esteghlal for 10 years and won the Asian Championship with them in 1970.

He was later chosen as the team’s head coach in 1983 and led the Blues to their second Asian trophy in 1991.

He then became Iran’s national team head coach in 1998 and inspired the national team to win the Asian games in Bangkok. May he rest in peace.
