US distinction among Syria militants meaningless: Pundit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended a "pause" to airstrikes against foreign-backed militants in Aleppo to give more time to the US to separate "moderate" forces from other terrorists.

E. Michael Jones, editor of the Culture Wars online magazine, told Press TV on Saturday that US claims of “moderate rebels” were aimed at helping terrorists survive Syrian and Russian airstrikes.

“According to the New York Times, 11 of the 20 groups that are involved in fighting now this offensive to break the siege on Aleppo have been vetted by the CIA as moderate; so, obviously this is a fiction,” he said.

“There is no distinction here between these groups. These groups are there to topple the government and the United States is declaring that some are good and some are bad which is totally meaningless,” he said.

“The term moderate means that the Russians and the Syrian government should not be allowed to attack them,” Jones said.

"People on the ground do not see any distinction. They are all working together to overthrow the government,” he added.

Jones said every time there is a ceasefire, the militants use it as an opportunity to restore one of their offensives.

"Why should the Russians accept the US-made fiction that there are some moderate groups in Syria?" he asked.

Russia suspended its attacks in Aleppo several days ago. Syrian and Russian warplanes have not bombed Aleppo for the past 11 days to allow civilians leave the city via humanitarian corridors.
