Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam has gone down to its first defeat at the preliminary round of the 25th edition of Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup, losing to Al Riyadi of Lebanon.
On Wednesday, the Iranian squad fell to the Beirut-based club 63-74 in its last Group A encounter at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the Chinese city of Chenzhou.
The Iranian sportsmen had managed to roll to an 89–46 victory over Al Rayyan of Qatar in their previous match the previous day.
Petrochimi Bandar Imam is scheduled to take on Iraq’s Al Shorta in a quarterfinal showdown on Friday.
The 25th edition of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup started in Chenzhou, China, on October 8 and will conclude on October 16.
Petrochimi was drawn in Group A along with Lebanon’s Al Riyadi, Indian ONGC, Qatar’s Al Rayyan and Pauian Archiland of Chinese Taipei.
Group B consisted of Al Shorta, Kazakhstan’s Barsy Atyrau, Malaysian Westports Malaysia Dragons, Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates and China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers.
The preliminary round of the tournament was played in a round robin format, with every team taking on four opponents in its respective group.
The top four teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals. The Iranian team earned a quarter-final spot as the runner-up of Group A.
The winners of the quarter-finals will progress to the semi-finals, while the losing teams in the quarter-finals will play 5-8 classification games.
