The United States and the European Union member states are determined to derail any effort at the United Nations Security Council to end the war in Syria, an analyst told Press TV.
“We have two contending resolutions [at the UNSC]: One orchestrated to stop the Syrian army, with international help, from attacking the al-Nusra forces; the other [is] the Russian resolution to revive what was agreed to in September,” said Sara Flounders, the co-director of International Action Center. “But nothing was arrived because it is clear that the United States and the EU countries are not for peace. They are not for a negotiated settlement.”
On Saturday, two rival resolutions on Syria, one backed by the West and the other by Russia, were defeated at the UN Security Council, offering no relief to the besieged city of Aleppo and leaving the key powers even more divided over a course of action in the war-ravaged country.
Russia vetoed a French-drafted resolution, stressing that it did not sufficiently address the problem of militants being interwoven with Jabhat Fateh al-Sham terrorists (formerly known as the al-Nusra Front). The rival Russian draft also was rejected because it failed to get the minimum nine "yes" votes needed for approval by the 15-member council.
Flounder states that Syria has been flooded by tens of thousands of mercenary and fanatic forces under the aegis of the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey, who have no program except to tear apart Syria as what they did in Iraq and Libya.
“The casualties within Syria and millions of refugees and displaced persons are because of this criminal policy. The attacks on a member of the United Nations is in complete violation of the UN Charter. Yet this criminal conduct continues while there are also some excuses given by the US for this continuing war,” she noted.
