The United States is using Nusra Front terrorists as a proxy group to defeat the Syrian army and to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad, Marcus Papadopoulos, publisher and editor of Politics First told Press TV.
The analyst also said the Americans have been supporting al-Nusra Front, which recently changed its name to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, with weapons, money and logistics from the first day it emerged in Syria.
He went on to say since the US-led air campaign began, the Americans have not even once attacked al-Nusra terrorists.
“They [the Americans] know that al-Nusra after ISIS (Daesh) is the most formidable Islamist terrorist group in Syria and they know that al-Nusra poses a terrible threat to the Syrian army and the Americans want to see the Syrian army defeated and therefore with the Syrian army being defeated that would mean the collapse of the Syrian government and an Islamist regime coming to power in Damascus,” he stated.
This came after Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations said the US and its allies are using Nusra Front terrorists as a shield to protect what they call "moderate" militants in Syria.
Bashar al-Ja’afari also said Washington has never had a solid plan to help resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Papadopoulos further noted the United States and its allies are not “genuinely” interested in seeing a peaceful solution to the conflict in Syria.
He also mentioned the Americans want their own people to come to power in Damascus which would spell the end of Russian “influence” and “power” in the Middle East.
“So regrettably while the Russians are behaving in an admirable and honorable way in trying to bring about a peaceful solution to the conflict in Syria, the Americans are not interested in it and they simply want to see their proxies on the ground in Syria succeed,” he said.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. Over the past few months, the Takfiri militants active in the Arab country have suffered major setbacks as the Syrian army has managed to liberate several areas.
