Iranian volleyball players celebrate their victory over South Korea at the 2016 AVC Cup for Men in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, on September 24, 2016.

Iran’s national B volleyball team has trounced defending champion South Korea in straight sets at the preliminary round of the 2016 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Men in Thailand.

On Saturday, the Persians registered an emphatic win by seeing off the South Korean men's national volleyball team 3-0, with the set scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-16, in a Pool B match played at Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium in the central city of Nakhon Pathom.

The South Koreans got off to a decent start, and managed to notch up the first two points of the match to take an early lead over the Persians. The East Asians entered the first technical time-out 8-5.

The Iranians then narrowed the gap to 6-10, before the opposite side got a five-point advantage at the second technical time-out and both teams went out 16-11 for a breather. The Iranian volleyball players eventually won the set 25-23 despite the South Korean’s spirited fight-back.

Iran's squad maintained its array in the second set of the game, and went into a stiff competition against South Korea.

The Iranian sportsmen did not seem to be capitulating, and raced out to an 8-7 lead at the first technical time-out of the second set.
