Germans rally against TTIP, CETA agreements

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Israeli warplanes have launched fresh airstrikes on the Gaza Strip hours after three Palestinians were injured in similar attacks on the besieged territory. The towns of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia were both targeted. Tel Aviv claims the raids are in response to a rocket fried from Gaza.
     
  • A funeral procession for a dozen of people killed in a wedding ceremony in Turkey, turns into an anti-government demonstration. Relatives of the victims chanted anti-Erdogan slogans and threw objects during the demonstration. Turkey has been hit by a spate of terrorist attacks over the past few months.
     
  • Turkey has given the green light to Russia to use its Incirlik airbase to conduct airstrikes against Daesh. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim rejected media reports that Moscow pressured Ankara into letting it do so. He said Russia can use the base as several other countries do.
     
  • Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani says Tehran will stand by Baghdad in its fight against terrorism. Shamkhani also said the liberation of the Iraqi city of Mosul from Daesh terrorists will be the beginning of stability and national and geographical unity in the Arab country.
     
  • German activists have rallied in Berlin to protest against the negotiations between EU, US and Canada over two proposed trade agreements known as TTIP and CETA. They argue that the agreements will reduce the regulatory barriers for trade and environmental legislation, and endanger sovereignty of individual nations.
     
  • Over a dozen people have been killed after two car bomb explosions rocked the north-central region of Somalia. Police say the bombers targeted the local government headquarters in Galkayo. Heavy gunfire has also been heard following the explosions. Al-Shabab terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
     
  • Record breaking rainfall has caused flash floods in the US city of Austin over the weekend. The high waters swept through streets and across bridges, impeding traffic. Several people have been rescued from the fast moving waters.
     
  • At least 30 people have been killed in fresh floods caused by torrential rains in central and north-eastern India over the past three days. Officials say most of the deaths were caused by house collapse in Madhya Pradesh. The army is helping rescue people and air drop essential supplies.
