Iran wins silver in Rio freestyle wrestling

Iranian freestyle wrestler Komeail Qasemi is stripped of an Olympic gold as he loses against his Turkish opponent Taha Akgul in the final of the 125-kilogram class of 2016 Rio games.

He is the first heavyweight Iranian wrestler to reach the final in Olympic history.

Qasemi reached the final after outmuscling his US opponent 10-0 in a 33-second match, at the Carioca Arena 2 in Rio de Janeiro.

Before the final, he had overpowered wrestlers from Georgia, Canada, and Egypt.    

Also on Saturday, Iran’s 86-kilogram freestyle wrestler Alireza Karimi was defeated against US wrestler J'den Cox 3-1 in the quarterfinal round and was eliminated from the games. Karimi had beaten Tunisia’s Mohamed Saadaoui and Bulgaria’s Mihail Ganev before the quarters.

The Iranian Rio Olympics squad finished the world's foremost sporting event with three golds, one silver, and four bronzes.
