US teen takes own life after relentless school bullying

Daniel "Danny" Fitzpatrick committed suicide after being bullied for years.

A 13-year-old American boy has committed suicide after enduring years of bullying at school.

Daniel Fitzpatrick hanged himself with a belt in the attic of his home in Staten Island, New York, and his lifeless body was later discovered by his sister.

He left behind a tragic suicide letter detailing why he “gave up”. He accuses teachers at his school, at Holy Angels Catholic Academy in Brooklyn, of not doing “anything” to stop the constant abuse he faced by his bullies. He also penned down all the physical fights he got into, noting his finger had been fractured once. "My old friends changed, they didn't talk to me, they didn't even like me."

His devastated parents made their loss public to raise awareness about the issue of bullying and suicide. Daniel’s mother said her “son shouldn’t have to die to be heard.”

Daniel’s father, also named Daniel Fitzpatrick, uploaded a 20-minute video speaking to the parents of his son’s alleged bullies. He said, “all I have to say is I hope you never have to feel what my family is going through right now. You get to hold your children every night and day for the rest of your lives and their natural lives. I don’t get that anymore. Your little monsters took that away from me and my wife.”

In the United States, for youth aged between 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death according to the CDC. It results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year. The top three methods used in suicides of young people include firearm (45%), suffocation (40%), and poisoning (8%).
