Iran’s national under-17 soccer team, known domestically as Nojavanan, has thrashed Azerbaijan at the 9th edition of Kazakhstan President Cup.
The Iranians pulled off an emphatic victory against the Azerbaijani squad on Monday, securing a 3-0 win in their first Group B match played in the southern Kazakh city of Shymkent.
The Persians placed the Azerbaijanis’ goal under pressure since the onset of the game, and Alireza Asadabadi was on target twice to put the ball in the back of the opponent’s net and score a brace.
Mohammad Ghaderi added another goal for the Iranian team against Azerbaijan.
Iran will take on Russia in its second fixture on Tuesday evening.
The 9th edition of Kazakhstan President Cup started in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on August 7, and will wrap up on August 13.
Group A consists of teams from Albania, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Kyrgyzstan.
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s under-17 soccer team is in Group B with Azerbaijan, Russia and Tajikistan.
Kazakhstan President Cup is an international U-17 football tournament, which is held annually under the supervision of the Football Federation of Kazakhstan and FIFA. The first edition of the sporting event was staged in April 2008.
The champions will receive a cash prize of USD 1,000, the runners-up will get USD 6,000 and the third-place finishers will be awarded USD 4,000.
