Clinton video questions alleged Trump-Putin ties

US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has released a new campaign video that raises questions about her Republican rival Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Released on Sunday, the video begins with an onscreen text that reads: “We don't know why Trump praises Putin,” before showing footage of the New York businessman describing the Russian head of state as a “strong leader.”

Then, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host and former GOP representative Joe Scarborough appears on the screen, saying that Trump “seems to upend American foreign policy tradition in a way that benefits Vladimir Putin.”

Next, the viewers are shown some of Trump’s many controversial proposals that appear to benefit Moscow, including his criticism of NATO as “obsolete” and pointing to a Washington Post article from last month titled "Trump Campaign Guts GOP's Anti-Russia Stance on Ukraine.”

The video also refers to last month’s leak of thousands of hacked emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee.

American security officials, as well as the Clinton campaign, pointed their fingers at Moscow after the emails were published online by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.

"Russia if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," Trump is seen saying in the video, referring to Clinton’s illegal use of an email server when she was secretary of state.

Trump later on said his call on Moscow was “sarcastic,” but the Clinton campaign did not buy into that justification and raised the alarm over foreign intervention in the November vote.

The video then shows news anchors who try to find links between Trump's refusal to release his tax returns and Russia, before displaying a text that reads, "We don't know what's going on here, and Donald won't tell us."

Trump has firmly denied any ties to Russia, but said Putin will respect him if he gets elected into office.

Putin said in June that Moscow is ready to work with any president that American voters elect.
