Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his preparedness for "constructive dialogue" with Britain's newly appointed Prime Minister Theresa May.
"Vladimir Putin confirmed his willingness to have a constructive dialogue and to collaborate with the British prime minister about current issues concerning bilateral relations and the international agenda," said a statement released by the Kremlin on Wednesday.
Earlier, May was confirmed as the new British prime minister by Queen Elizabeth ll, replacing David Cameron as the head of the UK government.
Putin "stressed the conviction that the preservation and augmentation of the significant potential of Russian-British cooperation in various fields that has been accumulated for a long time is in the fundamental interests of the two countries," noted the statement.
Cameron's 'rich political experience'
It added that Putin had offered his thanks to Cameron, with whom he shared a sometimes difficult relationship.
"I hope that your rich political experience will be in demand in the future, both in the United Kingdom and in the international community," added the statement.
Cameron announced his resignation on June 24, a day after people in the UK voted to leave the EU. Cameron was among the senior politicians who supported the Remain campaign.
He left No 10 Downing Street on Wednesday for the last time after his final appearance in parliament as UK prime minister.
In his farewell statement outside Downing Street earlier on Wednesday morning, Cameron said May would provide "strong and stable leadership."
