Here is a round-up of global news developments:
- Saudi Arabia has carried out fresh airstrikes on the Yemeni province of Hudaydah. At least two fishermen were killed after Saudi warplanes targeted their boat in the Khawkhah district. International rights groups have repeatedly condemned Saudi Arabia for targeting Yemeni civilians and their economic infrastructure in its aerial campaign.
- China says it has the right to set up an air defense zone in the South China Sea. Vice Foreign Minister, Liu Zhenmin, says establishing the zone will depend on the level of threats faced by Beijing. This after an international court denied China’s claims to sovereignty in the South China Sea.
- Hundreds have rallied in London to voice their anger over the US police brutality against African-Americans. Black Lives Matter activists gathered outside the American embassy in solidarity with the protesters in the US. Demonstrations have been held across the US following the deadly police shootings of two black men last week.
- Libya’s internationally-recognized government has pounded Daesh positions in the flash point city of Sirte. Libyan forces are pressing ahead with a large-scale operation, launched in May to retake the city which is Daesh stronghold in the North African country. The liberation of Sirte would be a significant blow to the terror group.
- Terrorists have fired mortar shells on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo killing at least four civilians. The shells which hit the government-held residential areas of Aleppo, were fired despite a ceasefire. Last week, similar assaults on Aleppo claimed the lives of dozens of civilians.
- The Russian Defense Ministry says its airstrikes on Daesh positions near the Syrian city of Palmyra have inflicted heavy casualties on terrorists. The ministry noted that the air raids on the towns of Sukhnah and Arak also destroyed three ammunition depots, three tanks and a dozen other vehicles.
- The director of the UN World Food Program has warned about a humanitarian crisis in South Sudan where days of heavy fighting between rival factions have claimed the lives of hundreds of people. Ertharin Cousin says three-quarters of the population of the country needs humanitarian assistance.
- The death toll from a head-on collision involving two passenger trains in southern Italy has risen to twenty seven. Dozens others were wounded in the crash. The local authorities have appealed for blood donors to come forward. The cause of the collision is still to be determined.
