Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will set off for the Kazakh capital of Astana to participate in a ministerial meeting of the Caspian Sea littoral states.
Heading a delegation of legal and political experts, the Iranian foreign minister will leave Tehran on Tuesday to attend the meeting, which is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
Foreign ministers of Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Russia will come together to discuss key issues pertaining to the Caspian Sea, including its legal status, and outline a plan for a summit of the sea’s littoral states planned to be held in Kazakhstan.
An Iranian working group arrived in Astana earlier this week to participate in the expert-level meetings to devise a convention on the Caspian Sea’s legal status.
Heads of the Caspian Sea littoral states held a meeting in the Russian port city of Astrakhan in 2014.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water by area and is variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea.
The issue of the Caspian Sea’s legal regime gained importance following the breakup of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the emergence of new independent states.
