US, allies’ policy in Syria, hypocritical: Analyst

This file photo shows foreign-backed militants in Syria.

Press TV has interviewed Mark Weber, director of Institute for Historical Review in California, about Syria accusing certain regional and Western countries of supporting anti-Damascus terrorists, calling on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action over the issue.

A rough transcription of the interview appears below.

Press TV: Your thoughts on this accusation against Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia putting high precision weapons into the hands of militants, weapons which are being used on residential neighborhoods.

Weber: This statement by the Syrian government is a useful reminder of what is again of the double standard, hypocrisy of United States and countries aligned with United States with regard to Syria. It is well-known of course that United States along with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which claim to be motivated by a desire to fight terrorism, have been actually supporting groups which are carrying out terrorism.

What is important is not the propaganda pretext to fighting terrorism; it is the interest that countries are trying to pursue in Syria and in other countries when they carry out this. Very revealing in this regard is the email from Hillary Clinton’s inner circle that the State Department released just recently from the emails from 2012 in which Hillary Clinton and her inner circle made clear that the main motive in supporting the overthrow, the effort to overthrow the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad was to support and back Israel’s efforts which are interested ..., Israel, the Zionist state is very interested in overthrowing the Syrian government because it wants to counter and destroy especially Iranian influence in the region especially in the Arab world. When countries claim to be fighting terrorism, this is very up in the case or selective and what is important to understand is what are the goals and the interests they are trying to pursue in this regard.

Press TV: Why is it that when we see Syria address the UN in the same regard which they haven’t before, why is it that we do not see the UN put enough emphasis or spotlight on the supporters of these militant groups that are operating in Syria, groups that have been targeting civilians and soldiers alike indiscriminately?

Weber: Well quite a number of countries do highlight this. I mean Russia highlights this; Russia has been especially vocal in stressing not just the hypocrisy but even the stupidity of the United States efforts in this regard. There are many voices that are raised about this but it is important to remember that the United Nations, the efforts to counter the United States are very limited because in the Security Council which is the only body that is able to carry out real policy changes, United States has a veto role and United States over and over and over again has used its permanent seat holding in the Security Council to block any efforts that are going to counter the US policy and even more importantly that are going to be counter to what Israel wants and hold Israel accountable.

The main goal of the United States in the region as American officials have made clear over and over is the security interest of Israel and what it wants in this regard and without understanding that important factor, US policy in Syria is confusing and it is obviously hypocritical but it is important to understand what the underlying motive and effort of the United States is in the region with regard to the Syrian conflict today.

Press TV: And how drawn out is it going to make this conflict in Syria to have these militants, like let’s say you have al-Nusra Front with surface to air missile similar to that Adel al-Jubeir mentioned a couple of weeks ago that if he was up to set the Saudis, they will be putting extremely high-grade weaponry into the hands of militants? How drawn out and how lethal would that be to have extremists with these kinds of weapons?

Weber: Well as time goes on it is more and more clear who is on what side. Saudi Arabia, obviously Turkey, United States, indirectly Israel are supporting the efforts to overthrow the Syrian government. Russia, Iran, and of course the Syrian government itself are trying to hold on to their position, the Syrian government position there. This is more and more obvious to the world.

Unfortunately the efforts to try to bring about a political or peaceful solution to this effort have been stymied over and over and it looks increasingly as if the only way this is going to be resolved is militarily which is of course a catastrophe humanitarianly for the people of the region and so forth.
