Argentinians ask Messi to return to national team

Hundreds of Argentinians have staged a rally in the capital Buenos Aires to urge football star Lionel Messi to return to the national team.

Fans, who’d gathered in the rain at the Plaza de la Republica, shouted slogans in support of their superstar and waved banners that lauded Messi.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner announced his retirement from international duty last week without winning a major trophy with his country after Argentina lost the Copa America title to Chile on penalties.

President Mauricio Macri and football legend Diego Maradona have also asked the striker to change his mind about retiring.
