Italy’s second most wanted mafia boss has been arrested after being on the run for around 20 years.
Police found 46-year-old Ernesto Fazzalari sleeping in his bed in the country’s southern region of Calabria on Sunday.
Hailing from the Italy’s most powerful and richest criminal organization, the Calabrian ’Ndrangheta, Fazzalari was on the run since 1996.
He faces a life sentence after being tried in absentia. He was found guilty of weapons possession, theft, drug trafficking, and murder.
Fazzalari made a fortune from imports and trafficking of illegal narcotics as the head of one of the Calabrian society’s many crime families.
Reggio Calabria Prosecutor Federico Cafiero De Raho described the arrest of the “merciless killer” as historic.
Matteo Messina Denaro, a suspected leader of the Sicilian mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra (our thing) is the first on Italy’s most wanted fugitive list.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi thanked police and prosecutors involved in the arrest, saying, “Hurrah for Italy. Happy Sunday."
“These are the victories that comfort and support us in the difficult path against organized crime ... There is no fleeing from justice,” said Italy’s Interior Minister Angelino Alfano.
