Britons’ decision to leave the European Union would cause more problems for refugees who are in the country, Lee Jasper, a senior adviser to London’s former mayor said in an interview with Press TV on Friday.
Jasper also mentioned “race hate crimes, racist attacks and xenophobia” have increased and all of these are the indications of the toxic nature of the Brexit debate; therefore, “The black people, Muslims and immigrants are feeling as if they are strangers in their own country.”
The British people have chosen to leave the EU after more than 51 percent of Britons voted to leave the 28-member bloc in a historic referendum on June 23.
Pointing to the Britons’ misinterpretation of the real cause of their economic sufferings, the former senior adviser said, “It is frightening beyond belief to think that the mistakes of the bankers that caused 1.5 trillion pound bailout of the banking sector in this country and led to austerity in which people faced swingeing cuts to their public services has concluded with the British public blaming immigrants for putting pressure on public services.”
Moody's, a leading credit ratings agency, has downgraded Britain’s credit standing in the wake of the UK’s vote to exit the EU. The decision has caused the UK money to collapse. The pound fell to its lowest level against the US dollar since 1985 as the global markets reacted to the results.
Jasper said the global “markets responded to the Brexit and billions have been wiped off”.
Another interviewee of this edition of the Press TV debate program, for his part, ruled out the media propaganda on the aftermath of the Brexit, saying that it is too soon to see what will happen after the exit of Britain from the European Union and there is no reason to panic in this case.
Paul Craig Roberts, a former assistant secretary of the US Treasury from Atlanta, also said the British had economic and political reasons to leave the European Union.
