US express concern over North Korea's missile test in Sea of Japan

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The US has expressed concern after North Korea reportedly fired two missiles over the Sea of Japan. The Pentagon says the projectiles were intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The missiles were fired within hours from each other. Japan has also condemned the move, saying it cannot be tolerated.
  • Tensions remain high in Mexico’s southern state of Vohaka after violent clashes left eight teachers dead and more than 100 more injured over the weekend. Teachers rallied outside the education department to condemn the killing of their colleagues. They called on the government to punish those responsible for the deaths.
  • Haitian lawmakers are divided on whether to extend the mandate for interim President Josi-lerme Privert. On Tuesday, the legislators delayed a vote on the issue. Meanwhile, protesters staged a demonstration outside the parliament to support the interim president. They say Privert is tasked with holding a free and just election.
  • The UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen has voiced concern over a humanitarian crisis in the war-stricken country. More than half of the Yemeni population is living under emergency levels of food insecurity. Jamie Mc-Goldrick has cited import restrictions as one of the reasons behind the worsening food crisis. 
  • Two raging bushfires in the US state of California have forced some eight-hundred residents of two cities to flee their homes. More than six-hundred firefighters worked to contain the blazes near Azusa and Duarte. The fires have cause massive power outages.
  • Two days to a crucial referendum, the British Prime Minister has warned that a vote to leave the EU would pose a huge risk to the country. David Cameron said staying in the 28-nation bloc is important for the country both in terms of economy and security.
  • Forces loyal to Libya’s unity government have liberated several areas in the Daesh-held city of Sirte. The clashes have left 34 pro-government forces dead and 60 more wounded. This week the pro-government forces managed to liberate numerous towns on the outskirt of Sirte despite fierce resistance by terrorists.
  • An anti-regime protest continues in Bahrain’s town of Diraz outside the residence of top Shia cleric Sheikh Issa Qassim whose citizenship was revoked on Monday. Hundreds of supporters of the cleric staged a sit-in protest to vent their anger at the ruling Al Khalifah regime.
