Bahraini protesters hold fresh anti-regime rally

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Bahrainis have staged a fresh anti-regime protest rally to condemn the revoking of the citizenship of top Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim. The rally was held outside the cleric's home in the town of Diraz at dawn. The protesters spent the night in front of his house in a gesture of support. 
  • At least eight civilians have been killed and nine others wounded in a Saudi airstrike in southern Yemen. Saudi jets targeted a building in an area along the boundary between the provinces of Lahij and Taizz. The war has killed over ninety-four hundred Yemenis since March 2015.
  • A bomb attack has killed at least six Jordanian soldiers and wounded several others near the border with Syria. The Jordanian army says the car bomb went off outside a refugee camp in the Rakban district. This is the second attack targeting Jordanian forces this month.
  • UNICEF is calling for better living conditions for refugee children in Germany. The UN children's fund says the kids suffer lack of proper medical care and access to schools for months. The agency says the refugee children, who are traumatized by war and violence, need special protection and care. 
  • Israeli military forces have demolished a Palestinian house in the village of Haja in the occupied West Bank. Tel Aviv blames the owner for killing a US tourist and wounding several Israelis in a stabbing spree in March. The 22-year-old Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces following the attack.
  • The Taliban have kidnapped around 27 passengers after stopping three buses in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand. Local sources say they've taken the passengers to an unknown location. The militants have intensified attacks in the war-torn country in the wake of the appointment of Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada as their new leader.
  • Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos says the government and FARC rebels will complete the peace talks in Cuba by July 20. The negotiations will end more than five decades of war in the Andean country. They have yet to agree on a ceasefire or the implementation of a peace deal.
  • NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urges the European Union to keep its sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis. Earlier, the German Foreign Minister called for the gradual phasing-out of Russia's sanctions. Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that NATO's military drills in Eastern Europe could fuel tensions with Moscow.
