One person has lost his life and several others sustained injuries when a man went on a stabbing spree at a medical clinic in Canada’s western province of Alberta.

Police officials said they were called to the Perpetual Wellness Chinese Medical Center at the Central Landmark building in northwestern Calgary at around 2:35 p.m. local time (2135 GMT) on Thursday.

Security forces discovered a deceased man lying on the ground, and a man and woman with non-life-threatening injuries at the scene.

The woman was transported to hospital, and the man was treated at the site and then taken into custody. Police did not provide any further details about the suspect.

Emma Wong, a shop owner in the building, said she heard a commotion upstairs.

“All of a sudden we heard a lot of shouting. It got worse, considerably louder, so I went out to look,” she said, adding, “In the past we've had gunshots, we've had knife fights, but never a fatality like this.”

Inspector Dean Lagrange with the Calgary police said the incident was "domestic in nature" and that all three individuals knew each other.

“I believe that the target was the deceased individual,” he said, adding that the suspect was calm and co-operative when police arrived and took him into custody.
