Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for US president, has widened her lead over Republican rival Donald Trump in a new national poll.
Clinton’s lead over Trump has broadened to 7 points nationally - 49 to 42 percent - among registered voters, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday.
The former secretary of state has eaten away at Trump’s support among men and white voters over the past two weeks, the survey shows.
She leads the billionaire businessman 58 to 33 percent among voters describing themselves as moderate.
Trump led Clinton by 14 points among men in last week’s survey, but that has narrowed to only 9 points in the new poll. Trump is favored by 58 percent of men, compared to 33 percent who back Clinton.
Among white voters, Trump’s lead also shrank to 9 points, 50 percent to 41 percent.
The results come a week after Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nominee when she secured more than 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.
Clinton also got a boost by winning the backing of top Democrats, including President Barack Obama.
A majority of voters, 54 percent, believe that Clinton will win the general election in November, while 40 percent have the same opinion about Trump, according to the survey.
The 14-point margin is up from only a 5-point margin last week, indicating that Clinton is gaining ground in a match-up against her Republican rival.
