Scientists to diagnose dementia prior to brain damage

There are millions of people across the world who are suffering from dementia, a brain condition which affects a person's memory, thinking, and behavior. Now, researchers in the UK are trying to find a way to diagnose the disease before it destroys the brain.

Scientists at the University College London are using a magnetic method to stimulate small parts of the brain.

They want to see whether it can alert doctors to the earliest signs of dementia. During the non-invasive procedure, a magnetic field generator, or coil, is placed near the head of the person receiving the treatment.

The coil produces small electric currents in the region of the brain. And this in turns help doctors better understand how the disease affects the brain.

Today, over 46 million people around the world are living with dementia. And despite so many people being affected, there's no clinically proven treatment for the condition.
