US stunt pilot killed during airshow in Georgia

A plane crashed at an air show near Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday while performing stunts, killing the pilot.

A US pilot was killed on Saturday at an air stunt show when his plane crashed at an airport in Chamblee, Georgia, officials said.

The pilot, who was not identified, was performing aerial acrobatics with another small plane when he crashed at the Good Neighbor Day Air Show and Open House at the DeKalb Peachtree Airport.

Airport director Mario Evans said the pilot was a Georgia resident.

The crash was captured on video. The video shows two planes crossing each other close to the ground while trailing white smoke, before one of the planes rises high in the air in what appears to be a loop before descending and appearing to lose control.

DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan said in an emailed statement that it was the first accident in the air show's more-than 30-year history.

DeKalb County Public Information Officer Sheira Campbell said it was too soon to speculate on what caused the accident.

Campbell said the pilot will not be identified until his next of kin are notified. Campbell also said there were no other injuries on the ground and there was no other damage other than the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were among investigating agencies.

DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May said in a news release that "A tragedy occurred as professional pilots entertained and educated thousands today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the pilot who lost his life."
