- The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says defending Palestine is tantamount to defending Islam. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the Islamic Republic will continue to support the Palestinian cause. The Leader made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting head of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine.
- Iranians have celebrated the national Teachers Day. Schools around the country marked the day in special ceremonies. Students thank their teachers for their hard work by giving gifts to them. Teachers Day in Iran is held on the martyrdom anniversary of Ayatollah Morteza Motahari, a prominent cleric and politician.
- At least 10 Turkish soldiers have been injured after a bomb explosion hit their station in the southeastern town of Dicle. Turkish officials blame Kurdistan Workers’ Party militants for the attack. Earlier, the militants killed three soldiers in an ambush in the city of Nusaybin.
- The United Nations says 15 refugees have gone missing since their boat sank in the Mediterranean on Friday. The accident happened 4 hours after the boat left Libya for Italy. Only a day earlier 84 asylum seekers went missing in a similar incident off the coast of Libya.
- Workers around the world are marking the 127th International Workers’ Day. In the German city of Plauen the May Day rally was marred by clashes between left-wing and right-wing demonstrators. German police used water cannon to disperse the crowd. In Turkey, anti-riot police clashed with protesters in Istanbul, arresting 36 people.
- A Ukrainian soldier has been killed, and seven others wounded by shelling of pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine despite a truce for the Easter and May Day holidays. Meanwhile, pro-Russian forces lost two of their fighters in shelling by Ukrainian forces on Easter night.
- Militant rocket attacks on residential neighborhoods in the Syrian city of Aleppo have claimed the lives of 6 civilians. 40 others have been injured. The casualties include women and children. The city is witnessing a spate of militant attacks.
- Followers of Iraq's prominent Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have announced the disbanding of their mass demonstration in Baghdad's Green Zone. The anti-government protest was held in the compound on Sunday a day after angry demonstrators stormed the parliament. The Iraqi prime minister has promised to deliver on radical reforms.
