Latest figures released by the United Nations (UN) show that at least 741 Iraqi people, including soldiers and civilians, lost their lives in violence in the country in the month of April.
The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in a monthly report issued on Sunday, put the number of Iraqi civilians killed in April at 410. The other 331 fatalities were members of the country’s security forces.
A total of 1,374 Iraqis were also wounded in armed clashes, acts of terror and violence in the war-ravaged country last month, it added.
In March, at least 1,119 people had been killed and 1,561 sustained injuries.
According to the latest UN report, the area worst hit by violence was the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, where 232 civilians were killed and 642 were wounded.
Violence has plagued the northern and western parts of Iraq ever since Daesh terrorists launched an offensive in June 2014, and took control of parts of Iraqi territory.
The militants have been committing crimes against all ethnic and religious communities in Iraq, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and others.
Units of army soldiers joined by fighters from Popular Mobilization Units are currently battling to win back militant-held regions in joint operations.
