It was in the early hours of 26 April 1986 that an explosion at a nuclear power plant in the Soviet city of Pripyat led to the worst nuclear accident ever. The catastrophe at Chernobyl sent large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere and contaminated much of the western Soviet Union and eastern Europe. Thirty years after the disaster, Ukrainians have gathered to commemorate the victims of the tragedy and remind the world of the accident’s long-term effects that still claim lives.
