Ryan raps Kerry on Iran's dollar access

US House Speaker Paul Ryan has criticized Secretary of State John Kerry for leaving the door open for Iran to have access to the US financial system.

US House Speaker Paul Ryan has refreshed his attack against the administration of President Barack Obama over Iran’s access to the US financial system.

Ryan has now called on Obama administration to rule out the possibility Iran will be given access to the dollar.

The Wisconsin Republican on Thursday criticized Secretary of State John Kerry for leaving the door open for Tehran to score what he describes as an unprecedented economic windfall as part of sanctions relief from the landmark nuclear deal, AP reported.

Administration officials have said repeatedly Iran will not get access to the dollar.

But Ryan says Kerry didn't definitively say no when he had the opportunity to do so earlier this week.

Ryan last Thursday has expressed strong opposition against any effort to give Iran access to the US dollar.

US banks are still banned from dealing with Iran as part of an old US trade embargo that still remains in place. Accordingly, this is believed to have already effectively blocked any transactions with Iran which is based on US dollars because they would ultimately have to be cleared in the US.

Indications had been specifically growing lately that a legacy of hefty fines by the US on banks that are caught for violating Iran sanctions is deterring businesses from trading with Iran.

Also, recent report showed that corporate leaders have already become frustrated over this even though the sanctions removal against Iran would have naturally meant the doors are open for investments in Iran.

US officials have emphasized that Iran is not gaining access to US financial system, but this failed to stop the attacks by the Congressional Republicans against any likely access by Iran to the dollar.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce of California on 19 April introduced a bill that prohibits the administration from allowing the dollar to be used in trade transactions with Iran.
