Netherlands airport partially evacuated due to security alert

The Dutch security forces have partially evacuated Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport following reports of a suspicious package.

“Police have evacuated part of the airport plaza and the adjacent Sheraton Hotel and arrested one person amid a suspicious situation” late on Tuesday, said airport spokeswoman Danielle Timmer, without giving the identity of the suspect.

The heavily-armed masked security forces cordoned off the area and the baggage of the detained man was examined in the presence of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, a special unit of the Dutch Armed Forces tasked with diffusing bombs.

Police said that it also conducted a search operation at a bus stop outside the airport's main terminal.

“Part of Schiphol is not accessible due to an incident... For now, air traffic has not been affected,” the airport said on its official Twitter account.

The alert reportedly triggered pandemonium as many stranded passengers started to run to safety.

Much of Europe remains on high alert following last month’s terror attacks in Brussels that claimed dozens of lives.
