Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad says his government has shown flexibility in the ongoing peace talks in Switzerland.
Assad made the remarks in an interview with a Russian news agency. Assad also said that several Arab and Western countries had hoped for a defeat by the Syrian army in order to impose their conditions during the negotiations. Assad further noted that the army’s success and Russia’s military support will accelerate a political settlement. Earlier on Tuesday, Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said the Saudi-backed opposition needs to realize that the demand for Assad’s departure will not lead to a solution. The Syrian government and the opposition are set to launch a fresh round of negotiations in Geneva on April 11th.
