The Iraqi army, backed by Popular Mobilization Units and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, continues its push to retake the Daesh-held city of Mosul for the 3rd day.
Iraqi forces have cleared the villages in the Makhmour area south of Mosul which they liberated on Friday. On Thursday, Iraq's joint operations command announced the beginning of the first phase of the so-called Conquest Operations in the northern Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital. While it’s not clear how long this stage of the offensive is expected to take, Baghdad is hoping to recapture Mosul this year. The city, which is the main hub of Daesh in Iraq, fell to the hands of the terrorists in 2014. Iraqi forces have recently dealt heavy blows to Daesh. Most notably, they managed to liberate Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, last month.
