The United States military says American and allied forces have carried out over two dozen airstrikes against Daesh (ISIL) positions in Iraq and Syria.

The Pentagon said Saturday that the US and its allies conducted 22 airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq on Friday and four in Syria.

Six of the strikes in Iraq were near Qayyarah, hitting four Daesh tactical units and three mortar positions.

In Syria, three strikes were near Mar'a and targeted two ISIL tactical units.

ISIL overran parts of Iraq in June 2014 after wreaking havoc on Syria.

Iraq on several occasions complained about the ineffectiveness of airstrikes launched by the US and its allies in June 2014 allegedly targeting Daesh terrorists in the north and west of the country.

The news follows the Pentagon’s Friday announcement of a plan to deploy additional American combat troops to Iraq to accelerate military operations against Daesh terrorists.

According to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, the Pentagon will submit proposals to President Barack Obama on how to boost military support to Iraqi forces.

Last month, a US military official said Pentagon’s announced figure of 3,500 American forces on the ground in Iraq was an underestimation, and that the real figure was hundreds more.
