Study: Healthy lifestyle can reduce risk of Alzheimer’s

A new survey in the UK suggests that three-quarters of Britons are unaware that they can help reduce the risk of dementia.

Experts agree that in the vast majority of cases, Alzheimer’s probably develops as a result of complex interactions among multiple factors. Although some risk factors cannot be changed, other risk factors usually can be changed to help reduce risk. Research in these areas may lead to new ways to detect those at highest risk.

Memory loss and confusion are the main symptoms of Alzheimer's

The poll was conducted by Alzheimer's Research UK. It says that only 25% of British adults were aware it is possible to reduce the risk of dementia through a healthy lifestyle. Lifestyle changes that might lower the risk of dementia include a balanced diet, regular exercise, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure, weight and cholesterol under control. Meanwhile, figures show that 44.3 million people worldwide are living with dementia.

Medics say one of the toughest facts to face as a dementia patient is that there is no cure or even a treatment which slows down its progress. So any preventative measure is encouraged. Figures show by the year 2050, around 135 million people globally will have the disease.
