- North Korea has threatened to carry out indiscriminate nuclear strikes against South Korea and the United States. The threat came hours before the beginning of large-scale joint military drills by Seoul and Washington which are now underway.
- Syrian opposition sources say the country has witnessed the calmest day since a UN-brokered ceasefire took effect in late February. The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that the average number of civilian deaths per day has decreased by 90 percent over the past nine days.
- Kurdish media say the United States is building two military bases in northern Syria. The reports suggest that one of the sites is located near the town of Rumaylan in Hasakah province, and the other is close to the city of Kobani. These territories are under the control of Syrian Kurdish fighters.
- Tunisia’s General Labor Union has slammed Bahrain’s decision to deny entry to two Tunisian Nobel Peace Prize winners as undemocratic and contrary to international law. The union says that its members were banned because the union refused to label Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement a terrorist organization.
- Turkish police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse female protesters in Istanbul ahead of the International Women's Day. Several women were injured in the clashes. The demonstrators were calling for better social and economic conditions.
- Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has urged European countries to immediately take in thousands of stranded refugees. Ahead of a key EU summit in Brussels, Tsipras accused the West of creating the refugee crisis by what he described as unreasonable interventions and cooperation in imperialistic conflicts.
- German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warns that Britain's exit from the European Union would damage the UK and global economies. Britain is planning to hold a referendum in June to decide on whether to remain in the EU or leave it.
- US Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has defeated his rival Hilary Clinton in the state of Maine democratic caucus. Sanders has won over 63 percent of the votes in the tiny state. The rivals are facing each other off in a debate. Meanwhile Florida Senator Marco Rubio has won the Republican primary election in Puerto Rico.
