Political commentator Ibrahim Moussawi, from Beirut, was interviewed by Press TV on a recent anti-Hezbollah announcement by the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council.
A rough transcription of the interview follows.
Press TV: What exactly annoys these Persian Gulf dictatorships so much about Hezbollah?
Moussawi: We know very well from the very beginning that they were not so happy about the triumphs, the victories, that Hezbollah has been able to achieve. The kind of achievements that Hezbollah has been able to do as a resistance movement has put all the Arab systems into shame, all the Arab regimes into shame, why, because they have always been saying that they cannot do anything about facing the Israeli occupation, defending their own people or whatever.
From the very beginning they have always been into the side of the conspiracy.
Press TV: A lot of these dictatorships say that Hezbollah seeks to destabilize them, how do you feel about such accusations?
Moussawi: We know very well when we talk about those countries, we’re talking about despots, we’re talking about undemocratic countries, we’re talking about sheikhdoms and emirates, and places where they have never experienced any kind or any expression, any manifestation of democracy, no elections, no freedom of expression, no opinion. We know very well many of the people who work on the social media have been imprisoned there.
So when it goes into a higher situation, when you go about the cause of the Ummah, when you talk about Palestine, when you talk about fighting the terrorism and the Takfiri groups, we know very well that they are very lenient and they are supporting and funneling support to those kinds of groups.
When Hezbollah stood up to the Israeli aggression, Hezbollah put all the Arab nations, especially those in the [Persian] Gulf, into shame, because they have always been saying words about supporting the Palestinian cause, but in effect they have never been able to produce evidence that they support the Palestinians or the Palestinian cause or they have anything to do with Jerusalem (al-Quds).
That’s why this is a kind of scandal for them, a continuous, a permanent, scandal that they cannot do anything about. They have always been giving pretext and alibis for their own people, about the ‘mighty Israel,’ ‘we can do nothing about it,’ ‘we cannot help fight the Israelis or support our fellow brethren in Palestine.’
Hezbollah has been able to achieve things as a small organization in Lebanon; has been able to achieve things that many countries, many states, many so-called states, were not able to do. Why, because they have no will, they have no determination, they have no resolve. They have taken this as a kind of excuse in order to put Hezbollah designated as a terrorist organization.
This is one reason and the other reason is that those organizations that are being supported by them, they were depicted by the international community, by Russia, by the United States, as terrorist organization.
They want to make a kind of balance, but they don’t know where and how. That’s why they are yielding and reaping a storm of accusations, a storm of criticism and very negative reactions to their position. The people are in one place and the governments in another place.
