Tel Aviv’s forces have shot and killed a young Palestinian woman for allegedly attempting to run over an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian, identified as 34-year-old Amani Husna Sabatin, was killed by Israeli gunfire near the illegal settlement of Gush Etzion south of the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Friday.
The Israeli military claimed that the Palestinian woman rammed her vehicle into a group of Israeli soldiers, slightly wounding one of them. A knife was found on the dashboard of the Palestinian’s vehicle, it added.
Witnesses said Israeli forces shot several bullets at the woman, who later succumbed to her gunshot wounds as she was denied medical care.
The incident comes two days after Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinians over an alleged stabbing attack north of the occupied West Bank.
More than 190 Palestinians, including children and women, have been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian lands since last October.
The latest wave of tensions was triggered by Israel’s imposition in August 2015 of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.
The restrictions have enraged Palestinians, who are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers frequently storming the al-Aqsa Mosque. The Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.
Israel jails Palestinian stone-thrower
In another development on Thursday, Israeli authorities jailed a Palestinian teenager for throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at illegal Israeli settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank.
Jihad al-Ja’abari, who was detained last November, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. The teen’s lawyer, Muhammad Mahmoud, said the Israeli Central Court also fined the 14-year-old boy nearly USD 1,300, adding that he plans to appeal the decision.
According to Addameer, a Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, Israeli forces have arrested as many as 450 Palestinian minors since February.
According to a recent report by Child Rights International Network about 700 Palestinian children are arrested by the Israeli military each year.
A large majority of the minors are arrested and jailed for throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.
Defense for Children International (DCI) also said on Thursday that Israeli military forces have shot and killed at least 16 Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip since the beginning of 2016.
