US overtly supporting military intervention in Syria: Activist

Press TV has interviewed Don DeBar, an activist and commentator in New York, to discuss the remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, calling for the closure of the Turkish border with Syria, saying the region is used to smuggle weapons into the Arab country to supply terror groups operating in Syria.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: We are looking at the situation with Turkey and of course that poorest border, Turkey was not a signatory to the ceasefire but at the same time this poorest border is one of the major problems regarding the transit of arms and supplies and of course the terrorists going back and forth. Why hasn’t the US along with the UN made more efforts to stop Turkey and have them actually monitor that area to stop the flow?

DeBar: They have been supporting the military effort themselves overtly. You have all kinds of assistance to the new intelligence, aerial photography, AWACS, all kinds of stuff going on there. They are directly run by the United States. It is only us out here in the world that do not know. Everybody involved knows who is playing.

The United States is conducting a war against Syria and against Russia and it is a proxy war to a degree, the US is using proxies for sure and the pretence, basically the use of Syria as a proxy allows a pretence that the United States is not conducting a war against Russia but if you look at the map they are moving their military assets up to the borders as close as they can almost all around it. I am surprised that they are not moving across Hudson Bay as well with the naval force and this was the access to the Mediterranean that Russia had and there is an entire context to this that is the conduct of a war including shooting down one of their planes by the United States against Russia and certainly using Syria as the battlefield and to the detriment of Syria.

Press TV: We saw the aerial shots that Russia provided when it had to, when it revealed all those tanks that were carrying the oil illegally, crossing the border. Why isn’t then proof provided about how these terrorists are moving back and forth from the poorest border along with arms being supplied to them in order for the international community i.e. the UN to react to it?

DeBar: I remember when they first went to the Iraq in 1991 those of us here who raised concern about getting bogged down in another Vietnam situation were chastened by, we were scoffed at by people who said, ‘well, you know it is not a jungle there, you can see everything and you know where everyone is’.

The US has satellite surveillance and it has flights, it has free rein of Iraq and it has Turkey and all of the countries surrounding Syria and its own AWACS in Syrian airspace along with its own jets. So they know exactly what is going on and what has happened is not an unintended consequence of US policy there. It is a part of a war, it is a battlefield and those are their troops, ISIS (Daesh), those people, their arms, their Toyotas, they did not build those in the desert.
